Wizard101: Best Starter Pets by School

Best School Starter Pets

 Wizard101 Pets

We recently presented our  Top 5 Starting pets for those starting on their PvP journey. However, as there are  over 400 first generation pets, excluding hybrids, there are many more pets and talents that are available that can be considered.

This time we grouped pets into schools and looked at the combination of talents, cards and statistics that would be beneficial for individual schools. After much research, looking at all 1st generation pets, from vendors, school quests, drops, packs and bundles our top pets for each school have been identified. Some of the pets that had made the list previously have been included in the school list and new ones have been added. Enjoy!

this in the the section that says what makes this pet great

  • Alex Thunderstaff

I’m curious for the first balance pet shouldn’t it say the paranah pet has the best of all talents or universal talents rather thsn best of worlds?

  • Alex Thunderstaff

I’m reading this when it’s 2/19/14 here in LA lol different time zones looks like I got a sneek peek :)

  • Alex Thunderstaff

This seems as this article was a bit rushed :d

  • asimplewhisper

i was kind of mislead. i thought it was literally a guide for school pets, as in the ones you get from your teachers through questing. but, still a great guide c: very helpful. death seems to have some amazing starting pets with those high stats. thanks for the guide :)

  • Cody DragonRider

I’m surprise chare grimhoarn didn’t make the list; also, you forgot to mention that MOOSE was the best myth pet to start with :)

    • SophiaShadowhunter

lol :) I just had a moment, how could I possibly have forgotten Moose!!!. I did consider the charred grimhorn, but currently not all the talents are known. The ones that are known are either card / may cast talents, so for now it was excluded.

  • Cody DragonRider

Oh, I just wanna add something that is a little off topic. It seem that dungeon like Winterbane which Erikur Axebreaker for tier 5 rank 13 boss have 30000 health; but, if you have level 40 go first in the sigil (this suppose to be tier 3) , follow by level 70, and a level 95, you just mix up the system. I was surprise that the final boss have 18000 health and he’s rank 13. I: The minion have 8000 health, kinda weird I: (first boss rank 12, second rank 11, (last) Joku rank 12 and his boss friend rank 11) Kingsisle changes it to the average level or something? I; cause i got level 70 gear after the fight I: (I was ecpecting 8000 boss health for the final boss. Turn out it 10000 more than I expect I: )

  • harogame

enchanted armament is still a best starting pet for pvp despite having almost half of its talents are selfish. it also has spell proof aproximately gives 10% universal resist and also comes with a pain giver. And a great fact for this pet is that it has no school of focus so no need for a mastery.

  • Hamza

    A mistake correcting
You wrote that the cold fire dragon comes from winterbane bundle card which is $39
But the winterbane does not give the pet
    The best is a drop!!

    • Hamza

      ** pet is a drop

  • Chasey

Um the bronze golem, the myth pet, it is a drop because i have gotten one from a boss i can’t remember which boss but it is in fact a drop, and i didn’t pay 10,000 crowns for that pet because i am Ice soooo yeah if i could remember the boss i would post it but sadly i dont. However it is a drop from a boss in Kr.

    • SophiaShadowhunter

Ty for the information. We have an awesome community here on duelist, hopefully someone can confirm (pics pls) that the golem is a drop that way I can update the entry :)

  • Alex Thunderstaff

yay thnx for awesome guide but wasn’t it removed once already? c:

    • http://www.duelist.p101/ Nick

I think it accidentally got published before it was finished, a week or so ago.

      • Alex Thunderstaff

I’m glad this guide is up and running again :)

  • Angel

What about the Sea Dragon? I know it has some card items in it but it generally has helpful talents(if you do consider posting it, I think this pet should be the general starter pet for every school just because even though its a fire school pet, it doesn’t have any fire talents(unless this is the reason why you didn’t post it).

    • SophiaShadowhunter

I agree the Sea Dragon is one of the best pets that can be utilised as a starting pet for all schools. However, this list is looking for pets that have school specific talents that would help wizards for specific schools. So, if I was a death wizard, the death pets, would increased death damage, or death accuracy etc. Hope this makes sense

  • Logan LegendThief

Wouldn’t a hatchable valiability type of thing be useful? like saying if a pet is available to get through hatching, for those that can’t buy crowns or farm the pets? or would that like ruin it cause it wouldnt be 1st generation?

    • http://www.duelist.p101/ Nick

If you get it through hatching it’s not really a starter pet at that point. This is suggestions for starter pets that are good places to start.. and then hatch with other things. It’s about the talent pool they come with right out of the package.

  • mirmir

Just one question, do you have any other recommendations for a good balance pet? Also, very organized guide :).

    • SophiaShadowhunter

The flying squirrel, enchanted armament and the polar fox are also worth considering. The flying squirrel is a drop and has some really nice starting talents and helping hands as a card. The armament pet is also a drop, whilst its starting talents arent as many as I wouldve like to have seen, its sharpened blades can stack and gives a balance more blades which are always useful :) and I like the polar fox but it is a holiday pet :(

    • Seth the Warlord

If you, or anyone at all wants to hatch with my polar fox, it has proof, defy, and fairy friend, we can meet up sometime. Preferably on a weekend.

  • Mrhappyman

Is the armor of unknown tarturas better or the champions armor of courage better? I know this comment is on the wrong page sry but pls reply.

    • http://www.duelist.p101/ Nick

That depends entirely on what you’re trying to accomplish with your build. Either one is pretty good, both have their own strong points.

  • Bold Benjamin Hawkins

Wow, I didn’t realize the betta fish got multiple cards. I had one lying around I trained it to teen and it got fairy friend! I didn’t realize I had such a good pet lying around. I vaugely remember now, hatching someone with a sea dragon. I guess I’m looking at my storms new pet!

    • SophiaShadowhunter

Congrats :) Love when surprises like that happen. Enjoy your new storm pet

  • Seth the Warlord

For the Ice list, would the nutcracker be a good pet? I believe it has fairy, proof, and ice giver. Maybe you didn’t include it because it was a holiday pet?

    • SophiaShadowhunter

Its a great pet, but as its was a holiday pet if you dont have one already it would be impossible to get a 1st gen.

      • Angel

Isn’t the Frankenbunny a holiday pet too?

        • SophiaShadowhunter

it is, one was pack pet the other was a quest one. So far the unique pet ones have not been repeated, like the nutcracker, however, as the frankybunny was a quest one and it was the first time it was included there is a chance that it will be back, which is why the pack pets were excluded and the bunny was included.

  • Mighty Necromancer

Got any for Death school that don’t cost money?

    • SophiaShadowhunter

After the pets above, I would consider the scarecrow which is a lvl 58 quest reward. If you feel like farming, try afew rounds for the Ianthine Spectre which is a rare drop by Gurtok Demon in the Plaza of Conquests, Dragonspyre

  • Valentin GrondeFoudre

The best pet of school of storm is a storm hound
    there is not even–‘

  • Tiffany owlcrafter

I have to say the death ghoul is by far the best pet in death school. I have one and at anchient it gives u the cards booster 1000 health and dinodeath is 500 damage plus 600 over 3 rounds. Death ghjoul is by far the best pet on wizard history.

  • disqus_dq3UEVN2QW

Just got a balance pet in krisalis. Tonight start training… for the moment i am using a sea dragon and it is amazing. It is an universal pet that I use for all my characters.

    • http://www.duelist.p101/ azoresgirl

      Congrats! :)

  • While You Read My Name I Took

Anyone got a sword and shield pet they want to hatch?

    • Igor Efimov

I hear Gladiator Dimebagwhatever has plenty, just for the asking (bring a lot of cleanses). He has been gracious enough to drop me around sixty EA’s and counting (I’ve since stopped counting cause I’m deleting them they are dropping so fast).

I began screening large numbers of first-generation EAs a few weeks before the “small” test. The second one I screened got pain and b-blade. The selfish talents are all horrid ultra-rare sticky things, but since Gladiator will happily provide you with a new one if your current one proves defective, it’s a high stat high yield universal pet that you can farm in QUANTITY and enjoy high-quality first gen talents.

Even if you are not a level 90 don’t fret – it’s very easy to accidentally run past Eris’ puzzle and into the Pit of the Noxii while doing a normal Olympus run – and you can always try your luck. I’d say every 5 runs or so, you will get a shiny new equilibrium egg. It’s the only pet he drops.

There are better balance pets, to be sure. This is one that has a lot of global appeal. Who doesn’t love getting a free b-blade?

  • wizfan 0508

I suck with pets and i never get good pets. But for the first time ever I actually think I got an ideal pet, but i need some advice . I have a spirit of nature pet and I trained it to teen and it learned pierce train (may cast pierce I think) so do u think its a good talent and I should continue to train it. Thx.

    • SophiaShadowhunter

When it comes to talents its really a personal choice. If you think the talent is useful to you in either pve or pvp go ahead and keep training your pet. I will give you some advice, if you are wanting a pet that is universal and most people will hatch with look for heals, generic resistance and damage. Not only are these sought after talents, but you could use these talents on any wizard that you like. Best of luck

  • joseph windcrafter

you should show the rain beetle because I don’t know where to get it

    • SophiaShadowhunter

Hi Joseph. The reason that the rain beetle wasn’t included is that its is a hybrid and the talents really depend on what pets are hatched together. The easiest way to get a rain beetle is find anyone with a storm beetle and hatch with any pet that you have, or you can hatch with anyone that has a rain beetle. Best of luck

  • tyler

Hi!!! I am new in wizard101 and i need some help with my pet. More precisely with hatching. For example: I want to hatch 2 of my pet. Spark Beast on the left side and a sea dragon on the right side. So, the question is: What pet I will get. Plz answer. I’m so confused

    • SophiaShadowhunter

Hi Tyler. Welcome to wizard and duelist. Unfortunately, its really just luck what pet you get back. It doesnt matter whether the pets are on your left or right :(

Try these guides http://www.duelist.p101/community/thepetguide/ as they have a lot of information that can help :)

      • tyler

hmmm but, how do you know which talents were transferred?

  • tyler

Does anyone know if a babydactyl gives three card at mega or just storman?

  • Robert Flint

What exactly does pedigree do? Increase your chance of getting that pet from hatching, or increase the chance of that pet’s stats going to the new pet?

    • FairyMender

Pedigree tells you if it fails or not, so if I have 45 (30) my pet may have common/foolish talents.
